Who is yiayia?

Yiayia means grandmother in Greek. She is the character at the centre of everything this Athens studio makes — the all-knowing, down-to-earth figure who grows, cooks and shares.

Around her, a cast of friends from the human and the animal world. Together they carry a simple idea: take the food and the objects of an older Greece, and redraw them for people cooking today. Olive oil pressed on Crete and bottled in matte black ceramic. Fleur de sel gathered by hand on nine islands. Rusks twice-baked the way the island bakers still do.

Why we love it

Serious food that refuses to look serious

Most fine-food brands ask to be taken solemnly. This one puts a pair of eyes on the bottle and then quietly delivers the real thing: cold-pressed Cretan oil with low acidity, pasta with milk in the dough, salt you finish a dish with rather than cook in.

We love that the packaging is worth keeping after the food is gone, and that nothing inside had to be compromised to earn it.
