Who is Alfar Tierra Cocida?

Alfar Tierra Cocida is a small pottery in Spain. Everything is thrown on the wheel and painted freehand — which is why the stripes never line up quite the same way twice, and why the ridges on a grater plate keep their bite: they are cut into the clay, not glued on top.

The range is built around the kitchen rather than the display cabinet. Grater plates in three sizes, oil bottles with a cork and a steel spout, salad bowls, pitchers, cups. Tools that get used, and that look like something when they are left out on the counter.

The same brushstroke never comes twice. That is what made by hand means.

Why we love it

Made to be used, not displayed

Most hand-painted ceramics are sold as decoration. These are sold as tools — a plate you grate garlic on and then serve the dressing from, a bottle that keeps oil out of the light, a bowl you toss the salad in at the table.

And because each piece is painted by hand, the one that arrives is not quite the one in the photograph. We think that is the point.
